Many states across America have individually banned the act of gambling online. Recently, politicians have fought this prohibition, stating that such bans are unconstitutional, but the most recent effort has unfortunately been unsuccessful. Earlier this week, Washington Supreme Court deemed that the current state-wide online gambling ban was not in violation of the US constitution. Despite the best efforts of pro-online gambling lobbyists, the current online gambling ban will be upheld.
Those who oppose the ban will continue to fight for the legalisation of online poker, and hope that the federal government will continue its dismantling of the UIGEA. They feel as though the Washington Supreme Court’s decision was unfair, as the judge overreached when determining the verdict.
However, Justice Richard B. Sanders disagrees, stating that “the interests of Washington are best served by banning Internet gambling”.
The legislature weighed the pros and cons of regulation against the pros and cons of prohibition. The results were inconclusive, but the legislature believes that it has no place in over turning the current ban. It seems as though we will have to wait until the new year to finally see the UIGEA and online gambling ban repealed.
