Cryptologic and Marvel Settle Lawsuit

Written By Janice Doughtrey

Earlier this year, Cryptologic filed a lawsuit against Marvel Comics for allegedly violating the contract that allowed the two companies to work together on a wide range of games based on the publishers superheroes. It has been a long and arduous legal battle, but Cryptologic and Marvel have emerged from the courtroom with an amicable solution.

In 2006, the two companies teamed up, signing a licensing agreement that would allow Cryptologic to base games on Marvel superheros. For four years, the pair experienced a great working relationship and a great deal of success for its online slots titles.

It wasn’t until 2009 that things went sour. Marvel Comics had granted licensing rights to other online casino operators, allowing other designers to create Marvel-themed slots games. Cryptologic was not pleased with this discovery and decided to take legal action.

For months, the two companies were engaged in a vicious legal battle, but they have finally come to a conclusion. The terms of their agreement have now been made ‘non-exclusive’ so Marvel will not longer be violating the contract when it signs deals with other companies. They will also maintain their working relationship, and Cryptologic has just announced an Avengers slots games will be released by the end of the year.
