The European Union has decided that it will investigate the
US law that bans people from online gambling. This move was undertaken after the EU received a number of complaints from Online Betting companies that are based in the continent.
This EU move is the result of a complaint launched in December with the EU by the Remote Gambling Association (a group that represents a number of online betting Companies based in the
Europe). In its complaint, the Remote Gambling Association claimed that US anti gambling laws were in infringement of international trade rules. In 2006, the
United States passed a law which banned European online operators from making any money by online betting in the
US. That move caused 3 UK companies, Sporting bet, Party Gaming and 888 Holdings large losses in revenue. This latest move by the EU has been welcomed by the RGA, which stated that its members were not being allowed to operate in the profitable
US territory. Adding his voice was EU trade Secretary Peter Mandelson, who said that the
US could resolve their citizen’s anxiety over internet gambling, but this should be done at the cost of European online operators.
